DEMENTIEVA LOST IN HER THIRD ROUND FRENCH OPEN

Elena Dementieva, No.4 seeded lost in her third round against Samantha Stosur 6-3, 4-6, 6-1. Samantha stosur outplayed dementieva in her first set. The reigning Olympic champion was broken twice to lose the opening set but fought back to edge the second.

Dementieva's problems on serve helped Stosur go 4-0 up in the decider and the 30th seed broke at 5-1 for the match.

Second seed Serena Williams almost followed Dementieva out, but beat Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez 4-6 6-3 6-4.

Martinez Sanchez took an ill-tempered opening set after breaking in the fifth game with a controversial shot which appeared to have bounced off her arm.

Annoyed with the call, Williams went on to level the contest and her opponent eventually ran out of steam, bowing out after two hours 11 minutes on the first match point.

"The ball did touch her 100% on her arm," said Williams afterwards. "The rules of tennis is when the ball hits your body, then it's out of play. You lose a point automatically.

"So the ball hit her body, and therefore, she should have lost the point instead of cheating."
